Traditional vs infrared

Traditional saunas heat the air (typically 150–195°F) using an electric or wood-fired heater and allow you to add steam. Infrared cabins run cooler (typically 120–150°F) and heat the body directly. Neither is universally better — it depends on the experience you prefer and where the sauna will live.

Sizing and capacity

Manufacturer capacity figures usually assume seated adults. If you'd like to lie down, look at bench length rather than headcount. Allow clearance for the door swing and heater guard.

Electrical requirements

Many traditional heaters need a dedicated 240V circuit installed by a licensed electrician. Some infrared models run on a standard household outlet. Check each product's specifications and budget for installation.

Placement

Indoor units need a level, water-resistant floor and adequate ventilation. Outdoor units need a solid, level foundation and protection from standing water.
