Sauna Electrical Requirements

Plug-in versus hard-wired, dedicated circuits, and what to ask an electrician before ordering.

Plug-in or hard-wired

Some infrared cabins are designed to run from a standard household outlet. Many traditional electric heaters must be hard-wired to a dedicated circuit. The requirement is set by the individual model, so read its specification before ordering.

Dedicated circuits

A dedicated circuit serves the sauna alone. Where a model calls for one, a licensed electrician should install it, and the cost depends on the distance from your panel and the panel's spare capacity.

Outdoor runs

Powering a backyard sauna may involve trenching, conduit and an exterior disconnect. Get a written quote before you buy the sauna, since this can be a significant part of the total project.

Questions for your electrician

Share the model's published voltage, amperage and wattage, the distance from the panel, and whether the installation is indoors or outdoors. If a figure is not published for the model you're considering, ask us and we'll confirm it with the manufacturer.

This guide is general information, not installation advice. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and local building and electrical codes, and use licensed trades where required.
